What is Model Context Protocol (MCP)?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard, created by Anthropic and adopted by Microsoft, that lets AI assistants connect securely to the tools and data inside business applications. Microsoft has adopted MCP across Business Central, Dynamics 365 CRM, and Finance & Operations, so an AI assistant can read and act on your data through a governed connection instead of manual exports or custom integrations.
How does MCP work with Business Central, Dynamics 365 CRM, and Finance & Operations?
MCP works through a dedicated server for each product that exposes its tools and data to an AI assistant under your existing sign-in and permissions. Business Central offers an official MCP server for read and write access to standard business data; Dynamics 365 CRM (Dataverse) offers a generally available MCP toolset that respects your roles and row-level security; and Finance & Operations offers a Dynamics 365 ERP MCP server, generally available since version 10.0.47, with data, form, and action tools.
Is MCP secure and does it respect my permissions?
Yes: MCP connections use Microsoft Entra ID sign-in and enforce the same permissions the signed-in user already has in Business Central, Dynamics 365 CRM, or Finance & Operations. Microsoft's official MCP servers are read-only by default, write actions require explicit permissions such as API page permissions in Business Central, and no assistant can see or change more than the connected user is authorized to.
